Blue Light/Computer Vision Lenses
Light is divided up into colors on a spectrum, from the coolest blue to the hottest red. The light from the blue light of the spectrum has the highest energy and can have the strongest effect on the human body. Basic sunlight is made up of 25 to 39 percent blue light, which your body and eyes can normally deal with quite easily. It's when you get indoors that the problems begin. Cool white LED lights give off over 35 percent of blue light, which can be damaging to your eyes. LED lights are in every appliance and device that you hold close to your eyes: tablets, smart phones, computer monitors, and even smart TVs. The more time you spend in front of a monitor or device, the more damage your eyes can suffer because of blue light.
There is an entire group of problems associated with increased computer use and eyesight, known as computer vision syndrome. Problems with blue light are among the most serious of these physical problems. Blue light is beneficial during the daytime, because it helps you to stay alert and energetic. The problem comes when you receive an overabundance of blue light while sitting at a screen for hours at a time. Watching television or working at a computer at night can throw off your body's circadian rhythm, which causes insomnia, and can also contribute to diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and obesity. In addition, blue light exposure has been shown to contribute to age-related macular degeneration, and can be a contributing factor for cataracts, as well.
No one is quite sure why prolonged exposure to blue light can cause these serious health risks, but at least some of the cause can be connected to the fact that blue light exposure suppresses melatonin in the body. This is shown to be connected to sleep levels, and early evidence suggests more serious health results, as well. For whatever the reason, scientists have shown a definite connection between blue light exposure and serious health risks.
