Eye Allergies or Dry Eye?
There are many eye and eyelid conditions that present similar symptoms, and this can lead to wasted time and continued discomfort if you incorrectly identify the cause.
For example, many people think that they have allergies and use eye drops when the problem is actually something else, such as blepharitis.
Like other allergies, these are often seasonal. They cause symptoms such as itching, eye-watering, red eyes, burning sensations, and general discomfort. Eye allergies are often helped by simply using eye drops. If staying away from allergens is not helpful, or if you need to use eye drops more than twice a day, you may be experiencing dry eye symptoms. Our optometrists recommend scheduling a dry eye exam to ascertain the underlying cause of your symptoms.Â
The term "blepharitis" refers to an inflammation of the eyelids. Unlike allergies, this problem is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria at the roots of the eyelashes. While it can cause some symptoms that are similar to allergies, there are also symptoms that don't fit with an allergic profile.
These include eyelashes that grow in odd directions, an accumulation of scurf and other debris on the lashes, and as time goes on, reduced tear production and dry eye.
A New Treatment for Blepharitis
Here at Advanced Eyecare Center, we offer a unique treatment called BlephEx. This treatment uses a gentle machine to thoroughly clean areas of your eyelids that are always missed when you wash your face or eyes.
By doing this, we eliminate the irritating biofilm from the base of your eyelashes and the edges of your eyelids. Your eyelids can then heal from their previous irritation. You'll also be given special solution and cleansing instructions for use at home in between treatments.
