When “occasional” dry eye problems turn into daily discomfort, you may have chronic dry eye syndrome. Dry eye occurs when eyes don’t create enough tears to stay properly lubricated. Dry eye syndrome can result either from inadequate tear production or when tears are of a poor quality. Tears are made of three components, water, oil and mucus. If these ingredients become imbalanced, tears can evaporate too quickly or fail to spread evenly over the cornea.

It’s not only uncomfortable; this condition can put the health of your eyes at risk. At Advanced Eyecare Center of Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, every aspect of your eye care is our concern.

Risk Factors and Symptoms

Genetics, life style and environment all play a part in causing dry eye. People who are at greatest risk to develop this syndrome may meet one or more of these conditions:

  • Aging
  • Being female
  • Some medications
  • Laser eye surgery patients
  • Radiation therapy patients (as in cancer treatment)
  • Dietary deficiencies
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Environmental conditions such as dry, windy climates or exposure to smoke
  • Long-term use of contact lenses

Symptoms of dry eye typically appear in both eyes and include the expected stinging, burning and dryness. Some patients also experience eye fatigue, sensitivity to light, excessive tearing, blurred vision and eye redness. Speak to your eye doctor if you’re suffering from any of these symptoms on a regular basis.

Each time we blink, tears wash away foreign matter from the eye and cover the cornea with a protective coating. Without the cleaning and protection of healthy tears, eyes are vulnerable to a number of problems. Dry eye syndrome may not be life threatening, but it can threaten your vision and should be taken seriously. If left untreated, dry eye can cause frequent eye infections and corneail scarring.

  • The use of over-the-counter artificial tears
  • Conserving tears through blocking tear ducts surgically or with removable plugs
  • Increasing tear production with prescription eye drops
  • Decreasing inflammation through the use of topical medications
  • Lifestyle changes such as taking breaks from the computer screen, wearing sunglasses, increasing humidity indoors or taking nutritional supplements may be suggested
