About Dry Eye

Dry eye is a painful condition that happens when a patient’s eyes are not able to generate sufficient liquidity to keep them comfortably lubricated. The cause is often blocked glands. When not treated, dry eye can worsen, leading to damage

What Is LipiFlow?

LipiFlow is an electronic device that is the only machine that’s been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration or FDA to treat Meibomian gland dysfunction, also referred to as MGD. In clinical studies spanning 25 years, LipiFlow has demonstrated its effectiveness and safety for treating this malady.

How Does the LipiFlow Machine Help with Dry Eye?

The LipiFlow machine relies on Vectored Thermal Pulsation technology along with an algorithm that controls exactly how much heat should be applied to the patient’s inner eyelids. LipiFlow brings gentle massage action that eliminates blockages in your Meibomian glands.

LipiFlow works with single-use devices that are sterilized and were designed to comfortably bring therapeutic heat energy to the patient’s Meibomian glands, using a combination of gentle pressure and heat, controlled by patented technology.

You can expect that treatment will take about 12 minutes here in our state-of-the-art eye care facility.

The result is that oil will once again flow from the glands to the tear film that is covering the surface of the eyeball. LipiFlow is approved for treating both the inner and outer eyelid.

Is LipiFlow the Right Treatment for Me?

Each patient will have unique circumstances, so your eye doctor will need to evaluate you before making a determination if using the LipiFlow machine will be beneficial to you. We may ask you to fill out a short questionnaire to assess the severity of your dry eye condition before coming in for your appointment.

The doctor will begin by getting your medical history and then will perform an eye exam. Tests must be conducted, involving the compression of your eyelid while the eye doctor examines it with a slit lamp, utilizing Dynamic Meibomian Imaging. DMIS gives a high-resolution of the gland structure and is an essential aspect of your eye doctor checking you for MGD.
